In this 12-hour online course you’ll learn the science and practice of mindfulness from Peace in Schools, the nonprofit that launched the first for-credit mindfulness class in a U.S. public high school.
You’ll learn the basics of Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), Dr. Dan Siegel’s pioneering field of study. We’ll cover basic brain anatomy, development and function. And you’ll learn about the latest scientific research on mindfulness practices, including trauma-informed practices and the polyvagal theory. You’ll gain both a theoretical and experiential understanding of the brain-body connection.
You’ll be introduced to foundational mindfulness practices and experience directly how they can transform your life. You’ll build attentional skills, cultivate acceptance, bring awareness to the inner critic, learn compassion and practice relational mindfulness skills.
We’ll focus on how mindfulness can transform your life, your relationships and your work with youth.

This course is beneficial for anyone who works with children and teens, including educators, parents, counselors, mental health professionals and health care workers. Overall, you will learn how to embody mindfulness to benefit yourself and the youth in your life, including the ability to:
- Reduce stress, self-nurture, and regulate emotions
- Reinforce student engagement, intrinsic motivation and positive school climate
- Strengthen empathy and compassion
- Employ brain-friendly strategies in your work
- Enhance communication and trust
- Strengthen the brain’s executive function to develop attention, higher-order processing, cognitive flexibility and creative problem-solving
- Help with anxiety, trauma, sensory integration and ADHD
Caverly Morgan is the founder and Executive Director of the Portland-based nonprofit Peace in Schools.
As noted in the July issue of Mindful, her program launched the nation’s first for-credit mindfulness course in a U.S. high school in 2014. This groundbreaking class is now in five high schools and expanding.
Caverly leads the Peace in Schools teaching team, develops the mindfulness curriculum and works directly with teens. Her vision is to make mindfulness a recognized discipline in public education.
Caverly has been practicing mindfulness since 1995, including eight years as a monk in a silent Zen monastery. She brings insight, passion and humor to her transformative work with students of all ages.
Christine Downs, MEd, teacher, artist, yoga and mindfulness practitioner, just completed a semester co-teaching the Mindful Studies course at Portland’s Wilson High School.
A special education teacher for many years, Christine taught students identified as having social‐emotional, behavioral and/or learning challenges.
Christine also enjoyed 15 years teaching and mentoring special educators in training in PSU’s Graduate School of Education. In 2013 Christine began instructing the IPNB course, Learning and the Brain for PSU, and returned to teaching K-12 students as a substitute teacher.
