Since stress and trauma reside in, and manifest through, the body's physiology, trauma researchers such as Bessel van der Kolk, MD, and Bruce Perry, MD, recommend body-based interventions like yoga, mindful movement and other forms of body awareness to release stress, regulate the nervous system, and develop a sense of safety and control.
Contributing to this exciting new field is Dr. David Berceli’s Trauma Releasing Exercise (TRE®). Developed from over 20 years of experience supporting victims of abuse, natural disaster, and war, this revolutionary approach helps to release tension and the neurological imprint of trauma from the core of the body by evoking an innate, therapeutic response — self-controlled muscular shaking.
Have you ever noticed your body shaking in response to a stressful situation or seen a child shaking their legs back and forth when nervous? That shaking is called neurogenic tremoring — an innate release system that nearly all mammals are born with and that is an important component in how the body handles stress.
Recognizing that shaking is a normal, healthy response to release tension, TRE mobilizes it through six yoga‐like exercise. The process is unique in that this shaking originates deep in the core of the body, with gentle waves of movement that reverberate outward along the spine, releasing tension from the sacrum to the cranium. The exercises are a simple form of stretching and are used to gently start these voluntary muscle releases.
TRE can be done by anyone, in any setting, to release the stress or tension that accumulates from everyday life, difficult situations, immediate or prolonged stressful situations, or past traumatic life experiences (e.g., natural disasters, social or domestic violence).
Currently being researched by the Veteran’s Administration, TRE is being used worldwide for individual health support and by therapists, counselors and human service providers as a low-cost complement to cognitive and behavior-based therapies. They report that TRE decreases anxiety, emotional reactivity, physical pain and hypervigilance, and improves resilience to stress.
Who is this Workshop for?
This workshop is particularly useful for teachers, counselors, clinicians, social service workers, parents, foster/adoptive parents, or anyone working with populations affected by stress and trauma. It is designed for the general public and anyone interested in leading TRE sessions as a Certified Practitioner.
Learning to manage our stress and regulate our nervous system is fundamental to helping others develop their self-regulatory capacities, positive attachment and social/emotional competencies. Therefore, learning TRE as a self-care strategy is the overarching goal of this workshop.
In addition, this workshop is part of a certification series for those interested in becoming certified to lead others in TRE.
What else you will gain from this workshop:
- Insight into how shaking and flight, flight and freeze reactions are “intelligent“ physiological responses to stress and how to work with them.
- Firsthand experience on how TRE works to help manage stress, tension, trauma and post-trauma reactions from personal and professional experiences.
- A basic understanding of the physiology of stress and trauma from leading theorists, including an introduction to Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory and the power of the "social engagement nervous system" to mitigate the stress response.
- Basic proficiently in leading individual and group TRE sessions with youth and adults, in school, therapeutic, home and agency settings.
- Most importantly, you’ll gain skills to help you manage your own stress, trauma and post-trauma reactions from personal and professional experiences — benefiting your work, your relationships, and your well-being.

A certificate of completion will be provided upon workshop completion listing 18 contact hours.
1 graduate credit available from University of the Pacific/Benerd College, 18 Clock Hours and/or CEUs.
Training also qualifies as 18 hours of CE toward Yoga Alliance continuing education requirements for existing RYTs (Yoga Alliance requires that RYTs submit a minimum of 30 hours every three years).
This Module 1 workshop is part of the requirements to become a Certified TRE Provider. Please review Certification Requirements here. In addition to these requirements, you must take your Module 1 and Module 2 workshops with the same instructor, and complete your Module 1 workshop before attending your Module 2 workshop.
For those interested in continuing their training and ultimately becoming certified in TRE, Lynea will be providing a Module 2 Training, October 16-17, 2020 in Portland, Oregon.

Lynea Gillen, LPC, RYT, and Certified TRE Provider, is pioneer in the field of health and wellness education for youth. Her heart-centered, creative and effective tools were developed directly from her 35+ years of supporting youth as a school teacher, counselor and clinician.
Lynea's Yoga Calm program was developed in a behavior classroom in a rural Oregon elementary school 20 years ago and is now being used with tens of thousands of children around the world in diverse settings such as urban classrooms, clinics and psychiatric hospitals like the Mayo Clinic.
Lynea is also an adjunct professor at Portland State University, Lewis & Clark College and the University of the Pacific where she has created over a dozen courses in counseling and special education and has taught thousands of teachers, counselors and therapists. Her books and media have also won nine national awards. Lynea is a current Licensed Professional Counselor with the state of Oregon, holds an MS in Counseling in Education from PSU and is a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance.
Lynea will be acting as the workshop's lead instructor with Dr David Berceli joining the training by webcast for a Q & A session.
David Berceli, PhD, is an international expert in the areas of trauma intervention and conflict resolution and the founder of TRE. For 22 years, Berceli lived and worked in war‐torn countries of Africa and the Middle East. Along with individual trauma counseling, he has provided specialized trauma recovery assistance to United States military personnel, national and international relief agencies, and government and non‐government organizations whose staff are living and working in trauma inducing environments. David Berceli’s books include Trauma Releasing Exercises: A Revolutionary New Method for Stress & Trauma Recovery and The Revolutionary Trauma Release Exercises: Transcend Your Toughest Times. A clinical social worker, licensed massage therapist and certified bioenergetics therapist, David currently travels around the world teaching the TRE™ self‐healing modality.
