Since stress and trauma reside in, and manifest through, the body's physiology, researchers like Bessel van der Kolk MD and Bruce Perry MD, recommend body-based interventions like yoga, mindful movement and other forms of body awareness to release stress, regulate the nervous system, and develop a sense of safety and control.
Contributing to exciting new field is Dr. David Berceli’s Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®). Developed from over 20 years of experience supporting victims of abuse, natural disaster and war, this revolutionary approach helps to release tension and the neurological imprint of trauma from the core of the body by evoking an innate, therapeutic response -- self-controlled muscular shaking.
Have you ever noticed your body shaking in response to a stressful situation or seen a child shaking their legs back and forth when nervous? That shaking is called neurogenic tremoring – an innate release system that nearly all mammals are born with and that is an important component in how the body handles stress.
Recognizing that shaking is a normal, healthy response to release tension, TRE mobilizes it through six yoga‐like exercise. The process is unique in that this shaking originates deep in the core of the body, with gentle waves of movement that reverberate outward along the spine, releasing tension from the sacrum to the cranium. The exercises are a simple form of stretching and are used to gently start these voluntary muscle releases.
TRE can be done by anyone, in any setting, to release the stress or tension that accumulates from everyday life, difficult situations, immediate or prolonged stressful situations, or past traumatic life experiences (e.g., natural disasters, social or domestic violence).
Currently being researched by the Veteran’s Administration, TRE is being used worldwide for individual health support and by therapists, counselors and human service providers as a low-cost complement to cognitive and behavior-based therapies. They report that TRE decreases anxiety, emotional reactivity, physical pain and hypervigilance, and improves resiliency to stress.
This course is particularly useful for teachers, counselors, clinicians, social service workers, parents, foster/adoptive parents,or anyone working with populations affected by stress and trauma.
Learning to manage our stress and regulate our nervous system is fundamental to helping others develop their self-regulatory capacities, positive attachment and noncognitive (social/emotional) competencies. Therefore, learning TRE as a self-care strategy is the the overarching goal of this course. In addition, this course is part of a certification series for those interested in becoming certified to lead others in TRE.
What else you will gain from this course:
- A basic understanding of the neurophysiology of stress and trauma from current literature and leading theorists, with an emphasis on somatic interventions like TRE.
- Firsthand experience fin how TRE works to help manage stress, tension, trauma and post-trauma reactions from personal and professional experiences.
- An introduction to the Polyvagal Theory of Stephen Porges and the power of the "social engagement nervous system" to mitigate the stress response.
- Insight into how shaking and flight, flight and freeze reactions are “intelligent“ physiological responses to stress and how to work with them.
- Basic proficiently in leading individual and group TRE sessions with youth and adults, in school, therapeutic, home and agency settings.
- But most importantly, you’ll also gain skills to help you manage your own stress, trauma and post-trauma reactions from personal and professional experiences – benefiting your work, your relationships, and your well-being.

A certificate of completion will be provided upon course completion listing 18 contact hours.
1 Graduate Credit from University of the Pacific, 18 Clock Hours and/or CEUs available.
Training also qualifies as 18 hours of CE towards Yoga Alliance continuing education requirements for existing RYTs (Yoga Alliance requires that RYTs submit a minimum of 30 hours every three years.)
This Module 1 workshop also fulfills one of the two training workshops that are part of the requirements to become a Certified TRE Provider. For those interested in continuing their training and ultimately becoming certified in TRE, Susan Shifman will be providing a Module 2 Training in Portland on April 22-24, 2019 at Still Moving Yoga.

Susan Shifman, TRE Certification Trainer, has had a long career in health and wellness industry as a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, Registered Yoga Instructor and Reiki Practitioner.
Since 2007, Susan has studied with Dr. David Berceli, and has had the wonderful opportunity to act as his assistant at many trainings and workshops, learning firsthand the art and science of supporting students from all walks of life with TRE. In addition to being a Level 1 & 2 TRE Practioner, Susan also served as Business Manager for TRE, LLC and as Certification Trainer for over five years.
Susan co-authored a chapter in David's new book, Shake It Of Naturally, and also produced the video, “Modifications for TRE,” for the physically challenged. This video is one of the required videos for trainees in the Global Certification Program.
Lynea Gillen, LPC, MS, RYT is pioneer in the field of health and wellness education for youth. Her heart-centered, creative and effective tools were developed directly from her 35 years of supporting youth as a school teacher, counselor and clinician.
Lynea's Yoga Calm program was developed in a behavior classroom in a rural Oregon elementary school over 17 years ago and is now being used with tens of thousands of children around the world in diverse settings such as urban classrooms, clinics and psychiatric hospitals like the Mayo Clinic.
Lynea is also an adjunct professor at Portland State University and Lewis & Clark College where she has created over a dozen courses in counseling and special education and has taught thousands of teachers, counselors and therapists. Her books and media have also won eight national awards. Lynea is a current Licensed Professional Counselor with the state of Oregon, holds an MS in Counseling in Education from PSU and is a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance.
