Yoga Calm: Educating the Heart, Mind and Body
Yoga and mindfulness are getting a lot of attention in educational circles these days – and rightfully so.
It’s no secret that kids today are over-stimulated, over-scheduled and overwhelmed. Teachers and administrators see it at school. Parents witness it at home. Physicians, nurses, counselors, therapists and others who regularly interact with children can tell you all about kids who are plain stressed out.
Veteran educator and school counselor Lynea Gillen saw it, too – and responded by bringing yoga to her students. Together with her husband Jim, a 40-year yoga practitioner and former Co-Principal Investigator for the National Science Foundation, they developed their methodology at a rural elementary school. It evolved into an award-winning program that integrates physical yoga, social-emotional learning (SEL) activities, counseling techniques and mindfulness practices, and has been used by more than 20,000 teachers in nearly a dozen countries.
More and more children benefit from this award-winning program every day.
