Is stress affecting your effectiveness, relationships and health? Do you want to find more effective ways to support your health and help others manage chronic stress and traumatic experiences?
Since stress and trauma reside in, and manifest through, the body’s physiology, trauma researchers such as Bessel van der Kolk, MD, and Bruce Perry, MD, recommend body-based interventions like yoga, mindful movement and other forms of body awareness to release stress, regulate the nervous system, and develop a sense of safety and control.
Contributing to this exciting new field is Dr. David Berceli’s Trauma Releasing Exercise (TRE®). Developed from over 20 years of experience supporting victims of abuse, natural disaster, and war, this revolutionary approach helps to release tension and the neurological imprint of trauma from the core of the body by evoking an innate, therapeutic response — self-controlled muscular shaking.
Have you ever noticed your body shaking in response to a stressful situation or seen a child shaking their legs back and forth when nervous? That shaking is called neurogenic tremoring — an innate release system that nearly all mammals are born with and that is an important component in how the body handles stress.
Recognizing that shaking is a normal, healthy response to release tension, TRE mobilizes it through six yoga‐like exercise. The process is unique in that this shaking originates deep in the core of the body, with gentle waves of movement that reverberate outward along the spine, releasing tension from the sacrum to the cranium. The exercises are a simple form of stretching and are used to gently start these voluntary muscle releases.
TRE can be done by anyone, in any setting, to release the stress or tension that accumulates from everyday life, difficult situations, immediate or prolonged stressful situations, or past traumatic life experiences (e.g., natural disasters, social or domestic violence).
Currently being researched by the Veteran’s Administration, TRE is being used worldwide for individual health support and by therapists, counselors and human service providers as a low-cost complement to cognitive and behavior-based therapies. They report that TRE decreases anxiety, emotional reactivity, physical pain and hypervigilance, and improves resilience to stress.
This training is particularly useful for teachers, counselors, clinicians, social service workers, parents, foster/adoptive parents, or anyone working with populations affected by stress and trauma. It is designed for the English-speaking general public and anyone interested in leading TRE sessions as a Certified Provider.
Learning to manage our stress and regulate our nervous system is fundamental to helping others develop their self-regulatory capacities, positive attachment and social/emotional competencies. Therefore, learning TRE as a self-care strategy is the overarching goal of this training.
In addition, this training is part of a certification series for those interested in becoming certified to lead others in TRE.
What else you will gain from this training:
Most importantly, you’ll gain skills to help you manage your own stress, trauma and post-trauma reactions from personal and professional experiences — benefiting your work, your relationships, and your well-being.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed our world, and thus the need for TRE is greater than ever. Recognizing this has led TRE’s governing body, TFA, to develop and provide new online methods of teaching individuals how to benefit from TRE, and training and certifying those interested in becoming TRE Providers.
Therefore, this Module 1 Certification Training will be delivered live, online via a private Zoom videoconferencing link.
Our team has many years of experience in delivering online training, and piloted TRE’s first online trainings. Our goal is to mirror what you would receive in an in-person training. Technological limitations and challenges could arise, so we will be prepared to ameliorate them.
We will do our best to protect all communications during the training. However, the nature of electronic communication and remote access and viewing presents some privacy risks and considerations. Related, it’s important to remember that this training is not therapy but instruction in how to use a stress reduction technique. Please read the training Terms & Conditions when registering for more information.
While Dr Berceli is now retired, we are honored that he allowed us to record and provide his lectures for our Module 1, 2 and 3 trainings. These 14 recordings include his latest insights into the art and science of this practice.
In addition to providing you with a powerful training experience from the founder of TRE, these videos will also be made available to you after the training so that you may review, refresh and deepen your understanding of TRE.
You need not be planning on becoming a Certified TRE provider to take this training and can just take this training for personal benefit.
For those working toward certification, in addition to this Module 1 training, there are two other two-day trainings (Modules 2 & 3) as well as supervision sessions required to become a Certified TRE Provider. If you are working toward Certification, make sure you mark the dates for the upcoming Module 2 and Module 3 trainings. (All upcoming training dates are available under the TRE section of our Calendar.)
For more information on the certification program contact Lynea@yogacalm.org
